Yes, just technique creates just pictures, and pretty pictures can shine, but only like so many rhinestones. To continue an unneeded metaphor, I often find the oft mentioned "rough" more interesting.

I'll agree. The process that creates a photograph and makes it art lies more in the process inside one's mind and heart rather than the process in one's computer. Use the computer or whatever tool is at your desposal to convey your mind's eye first.

Don't be a slave to the process, make the process work for you.

I wonder, often, whether the kind of book Timothy seems to have written is really useful in life. There was a quote by Peck recently in this book, a widely published book on similar subjects. It was interesting.. though I think I have spent a lot more time with works of fiction.

Jonathan also gave a great talk at TED. You can view it online here.

There was a bit more jovial ribbing on labels in the brief interview (a little cleaned up from the emails):

WIA: Fair enough, Jonathan. I'm glad you do what you do, in any case.

Jonathan Harris: By the way, you can use that as my quote, if you like.
I like your site's concept.

WIA: I very well may. I forgot to ask. If I put your quote up, is there a word you would like after your name, before the date?

Jonathan Harris: You could say, "Computer scientist"

Or, to be coy, you could say, "Artist"

WIA: Maybe I'll throw a slash in there. Thanks.

Possible actions to address artistic crisis in the U.S. ;

A. Sell all of one's possessions purchase one way ticket on British Airways and move to Europe.

B. If option A is not possible and living in America is one's fate, then cover television with a refridgerator box, read john berger & neil postman daily, and start weekly art conversations at your local coffee houses. (refridgerator box may be taken off on thursdays at nine to watch 'lost')

c. Sell all of one's possessions purchase one way ticket on British airways and move to Europe (option a and c are very similar but quite different - i used a lowercase a in airways)

I agree with you that anti-intellectualism is a severe problem. There is a trend towards willful and prideful ignorance which I find extremely distressing. You're right to point out that "artists" often seem much more concerned with what kind of paint was used or which lens is in their profile on a photo site than the content of anyone's work.

Conceptual art feels the pain of dealing with this most directly, probably, since the actual moment of enjoyment of the art comes from appreciating the thought behind it, usually the aesthetic is either happenstance or intentionally as neutral as possible.

I'm not really sure what to do about that problem. I hope that this project is a step in the right direction.
